Young Traditional Rulers Push for National Campaign Against Drug Abuse

The Association of Young Traditional Rulers of Cameroon (ATRACAM) has renewed its commitment to combating drug abuse among young people following the conclusion of its 5th Annual Executive Meeting in Buea.

The meeting, held on July 18, 2026, focused on the association\'s second mandate and preparations for its forthcoming General Assembly. It also provided an opportunity for members of the executive bureau to pay a courtesy visit to the Chief of Membea-Bokwaongo, HRM Albert Njie Mbonde, to discuss strategies for tackling drug abuse.

Speaking during the visit, Chief Kwami Beckley Nangoh of Monde Village and Acting Secretary General of ATRACAM said the association had identified the fight against drug consumption as one of its key priorities.

He commended the efforts of the Chief of Membea-Bokwaongo in addressing the problem within his community and expressed the association\'s determination to transform the initiative into a nationwide campaign.

Chief Nangoh warned that the widespread consumption of sachet whisky and other illicit substances was fuelling delinquency among young people and aggravating insecurity.

According to him, substance abuse has contributed to criminality and violence, particularly in conflict-affected areas, stressing that addressing the scourge would significantly improve security and protect the country\'s future generation.

He also urged traditional rulers to strengthen their leadership role by promoting development initiatives and responding to the needs of their communities.

For his part, His Majesty Mvogo Jean Blaise of Odoudouma in the Centre Region and National President of ATRACAM said the meeting sought practical solutions to the growing problem of drug and sachet whisky consumption among youths.

He disclosed that the recommendations of the meeting would be forwarded to the competent administrative authorities for consideration. He also announced plans to establish a regional branch of the association to strengthen its activities nationwide.

ATRACAM says it will continue working with administrative authorities, traditional institutions and local communities to intensify awareness campaigns and support efforts aimed at curbing drug abuse across Cameroon.
