Court Protest, Social Media Photo Rekindle Debate Over Chidimma Adetshina’s Citizenship

The controversy surrounding Chidimma Adetshina’s nationality has intensified after a group of women confronted her outside the Cape Town Regional Court, while a childhood photograph allegedly showing her in Nigeria resurfaced online.

A video circulating on social media shows several women following the former Miss South Africa contestant outside the courthouse, shouting, “Nigeria is your home,” and calling on her to leave South Africa. One of the women accused her of identity theft, allegations that remain part of ongoing legal proceedings.

The confrontation occurred as South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs continues its legal push to have Adetshina deported. Authorities have alleged that her South African identity documents were fraudulently obtained and argued in court that she possesses Nigerian travel documents and entered South Africa through Mozambique.

Her legal team has disputed the claims, maintaining that possession of a Nigerian passport does not automatically determine nationality or invalidate her legal status. Adetshina has also maintained that she did not personally benefit from any alleged fraudulent activity.

Adding to the debate, a childhood photograph allegedly showing Adetshina in Nigeria was shared on social media platform X on July 22, 2026. The image quickly went viral, with some users claiming it contradicts her previous statements that South Africa is the only home she has known.

The resurfaced photograph triggered mixed reactions online, with some users arguing that it supports questions raised over her nationality, while others insisted that a childhood image alone cannot establish proof of citizenship.

Adetshina, who was born to a Nigerian father and a Mozambican mother, first became the subject of national debate in 2024 when she withdrew from the Miss South Africa pageant amid controversy over her citizenship. She later represented Nigeria internationally after winning the Miss World Nigeria title.

The developments have further divided public opinion, with some supporting calls for her deportation and others condemning the public confrontation, insisting that the matter should be resolved through the courts.

The nationality dispute remains before the South African courts, with no final judgment delivered.
