East Region: Government Cracks Down on Illegal Gold Mining Activities

The Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji, has called for stricter compliance with mining regulations in the East Region, warning against illegal practices that continue to undermine public safety, environmental protection and state revenue.

Speaking during a working session with mining stakeholders in Bertoua on June 1, 2026, the minister expressed concern over the proliferation of unauthorised mining activities, influence peddling and repeated violations of laws governing the sector.

Drawing from reports submitted by the Governor of the East Region, Atanga Nji highlighted the increasing number of deaths recorded in and around mining sites, describing the situation as alarming. He recalled that the Head of State had ordered investigations into reported irregularities and urged all actors to cooperate fully with ongoing inquiries.

The minister also raised concerns about the environmental consequences of uncontrolled mining operations, including deforestation, land degradation, water pollution and the abandonment of exploited sites. He further deplored the involvement of school-age children in illegal mining activities.

Calling on operators to regularise their activities, obtain the required authorisations and respect existing regulations, Atanga Nji stressed that government would not tolerate actions that promote disorder, insecurity or illicit enrichment.

Officials from the Ministries of Mines and Environment, alongside representatives of gold mining operators, presented reports on the state of the sector, outlining challenges ranging from administrative bottlenecks to environmental concerns and revenue losses.

The meeting forms part of ongoing government efforts to strengthen governance in the mining sector, promote sustainable exploitation of natural resources and ensure peace and security in mining communities across the East Region.
