17 Cameroonians Rescued From Suspected Human Trafficking Ring In Dibombari

Seventeen young Cameroonians have been rescued from what authorities describe as a suspected human trafficking and online fraud network operating in Dibombari, in Cameroon’s Littoral Region.

The operation was conducted on May 14 by officers of the Bwélélo Gendarmerie Brigade, with support from security units in Mbanga. Four suspects were arrested during the raid.

Investigators say the group allegedly used fake online job advertisements to lure young people with promises of employment opportunities in Malaysia. Victims were reportedly asked to pay large sums of money before arrangements were made for their illegal departure.

The investigation began after Reverend Movuh Derick of Gospel Center Church in Babenga brought two escapees to the gendarmerie. The pair allegedly fled from a location in Yapaki, Dibombari, where several youths were being held while awaiting travel abroad.

Authorities identified the arrested suspects as Effim Leonel, 30, Mbi Betty, 26, Ako Boris, 28, and Nafissatou Berinyuy, 25.

Security forces also rescued 17 young people believed to have been preparing for departure to Malaysia. According to investigators, each victim allegedly paid around 550,000 FCFA in hopes of securing work and a better future overseas.

Officials say the case highlights the growing threat of online recruitment scams targeting vulnerable youths seeking opportunities abroad.

Investigations are ongoing to identify other possible members of the network.
