Meme SDO Clarifies Incident Involving Truck Driver In Kumba

The Senior Divisional Officer, SDO, for Meme, Chamberlin Nto’ou Ndong, has provided clarifications concerning an incident involving a truck driver in Kumba that recently sparked reactions on social media.

Speaking on Thursday after the incident, the administrator explained that the driver, identified as Takam Acel, allegedly drove recklessly and nearly collided with his official vehicle while reportedly under the influence of alcohol.

“I could have been taken to the mortuary,” the SDO stated, noting that the driver also insulted him without knowing he was addressing an administrative authority.

According to Chamberlin Nto’ou Ndong, the situation reflects the dangers associated with irresponsible driving, which continue to cause loss of lives on the nation’s roads.

The SDO dismissed reports suggesting that the driver was arrested simply for honking at him. He explained that he merely instructed that the driver be prevented from continuing his journey because of his alleged state of intoxication.

He further disclosed that the truck was placed under police protective custody while the driver was advised accordingly. The administrator also stated that he compensated the driver for the day’s lost earnings.

The driver was later released from the Kumba Central Police Station.

Meanwhile, the incident has continued to generate public debate, with some observers questioning the absence of a formal sobriety test to determine whether the driver was indeed intoxicated.

Others argued that if traffic laws had been violated, legal procedures should have been fully applied.

The incident once more highlights concerns relating to road safety, responsible driving and respect for administrative authority.
