Cavaye Yeguie Djibril Reportedly Dies at 86
Cavaye Yeguie Djibril, former Speaker of Cameroon’s National Assembly, has reportedly died, according to sources. He is said to have passed away on May 6, 2026, in his native Mada village in the Far North Region.
Born on February 1, 1940, in Mada, Tokombéré Subdivision, Cavaye Yeguie Djibril rose to become one of the most influential and enduring figures in Cameroon’s political landscape. His career spanned several decades, during which he established himself as a central actor in the country’s legislative affairs.
He was first elected Speaker of the National Assembly in March 1992 and went on to hold the position for 34 years, making him one of the longest-serving parliamentary leaders on the continent. Throughout his tenure, he presided over key legislative processes and remained a prominent pillar within the ruling establishment under President Paul Biya.
His long stay at the helm of the Lower House came to an end on March 17, 2026, marking the close of a significant chapter in Cameroon’s parliamentary history.
