World Press Freedom Day 2026: Nico Halle Calls Media Pillar of Democracy

By Lasha Kingsly

Sir Dr. Barrister Ntumfor Nico Halle has described the media as a fundamental pillar of democracy as he delivered a message to journalists and media practitioners on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, observed on 3 May 2026.

In his message, Nico Halle underscored the central role of the press in governance and public accountability, noting that no democratic system can function effectively without a free and responsible media.

Quoting American statesman Thomas Jefferson, he recalled the long-held principle that a free press is essential to liberty and accountability, stressing that the media remains indispensable in safeguarding democratic values.

He said the press plays a critical role in monitoring the actions of the executive, legislative, and other public institutions, thereby acting as both a mirror of society and a watchdog of governance.

Nico Halle extended congratulations to media professionals in Cameroon and across the world, commending their resilience and dedication in the face of difficult working conditions.

He described the media as an essential development partner, contributing to nation-building, strengthening democracy, reinforcing the rule of law, and exposing corruption, injustice, and moral decay.

However, he warned strongly against misinformation and irresponsible journalism, pointing to the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, during which more than 800,000 people were killed, as a tragic reminder of how dangerous manipulated information and hate speech can become when left unchecked.

He also acknowledged the harsh realities faced by journalists, including intimidation, threats, limited access to reliable information, and inadequate resources, all of which can hinder professional reporting.

Beyond legal and institutional frameworks, Nico Halle stressed the often-overlooked role of love in society, which he said has been neglected in modern governance and public life. According to him, an overreliance on law alone has not been sufficient to resolve deep social and moral challenges.

He recalled that this emphasis on love was also echoed during the recent visit of the Pope to Cameroon last April, during which the pontiff highlighted love as a guiding principle for peace, justice, and human coexistence.

According to Nico Halle, press freedom must therefore be exercised not only with responsibility and truth, but also with a spirit of love, understanding, and respect for humanity.

He further stated that while professional skills are important, it is character—anchored in honesty, dignity, truth, and love—that defines lasting success in journalism.

He urged media practitioners to remain committed to truthful reporting, noting that truth builds society, while misinformation destroys trust and deepens division.

Nico Halle encouraged journalists to remain courageous, disciplined, and steadfast in their calling, despite the challenges of the profession.

He concluded by praying for divine guidance, protection, and strength for all media practitioners, and extended his congratulations to all media houses, public and private, on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day 2026.
