Insecurity in Yaounde: Pregnant Woman Murdered at Home, Son Critically Injured

Yaounde has once again been shaken by a tragic case of domestic violence. This Friday, April 3,  a woman whose name we got as  Jessica, a pregnant employee of the civil registry department at the Yaoundé City Council (CUY), was found dead in her home. Her body reportedly bore multiple stab wounds. Her three-year-old son, who attempted to intervene during the attack, was also struck and is now in critical condition.
Jessica, recently divorced and expecting a child, was the only daughter of her mother, who now faces the heartbreaking loss of her child.
This incident highlights a growing pattern of insecurity and domestic violence in the Cameroonian capital. According to recent reports from local authorities and women’s rights organisations, cases of intimate partner violence in Yaoundé have been on the rise over the past two years, yet prosecutions remain limited, and public awareness campaigns are scarce.
Police have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack and to bring those responsible to justice. Meanwhile, local civil society groups have called for stronger protections for women and children, urging authorities to prioritise domestic violence prevention and support for survivors.
“This tragic case is a stark reminder of the dangers women face in their own homes,” said a representative of a Yaoundé-based women’s rights organisation. “Immediate action is needed to protect vulnerable families and ensure justice is served.”
As the city mourns another senseless loss, questions are being raised about how domestic violence can be more effectively addressed in Cameroon, and whether current measures are sufficient to protect women and children from harm.
