Illicit Drugs, Contraband Beverages: South West Governor Calls for Reinforced Control Measures
The Governor of the South West Region, Bernard Okalia Bilai, has instructed competent administrative, security and customs authorities to intensify surveillance and enforcement operations to curb the circulation and consumption of illicit drugs and contraband beverages within the region.
In a correspondence addressed to the Colonel Commanding the Gendarmerie Legion, the Regional Delegate for National Security and the Chief of Sector for Customs, the Governor prescribed concerted action following recurrent reports on the widespread availability of prohibited substances. Among the products cited are tramadol, Indian hemp, as well as unauthorized alcoholic and stimulant drinks notably Wake Up, Bullet, Odogu Bitters, Balamose and Action Bitters, considered harmful to public health.
Emphasis was laid on reinforcing controls at the various entry points into the South West Region, particularly in border localities such as Ekok, often identified as transit corridors for illicit goods. Security forces have equally been called upon to intensify field operations aimed at identifying, seizing and destroying such products in conformity with existing regulations.
The administrative authority noted that the proliferation of these substances constitutes a public health concern, especially among young people and schoolchildren exposed to their harmful effects. Observers have underscored the importance of sustained collaboration and coordination at national level to ensure effective enforcement and preserve public order.
