World Water Day 2026: Students Visit Yato Treatment Plant

Like the international community, the Cameroon Water Utilities Corporation (CAMWATER) on Sunday, March 22, 2026, commemorated the 34th edition of World Water Day, celebrated this year under the theme “Water, a source of equality.” The event was marked by an educational visit by students of the Institut Universitaire des Grandes Écoles des Tropiques (IUGET) to the Yato drinking water treatment plant in Douala.
Organised with the authorisation of the General Manager of CAMWATER, the visit forms part of the company’s contribution to the practical training of future professionals in water-related fields. Commissioned in 2010, the Yato plant is a strategic infrastructure with a production capacity of 150,000 cubic metres of potable water per day, supplying a significant portion of the population of Douala.
During the guided tour, the students were exposed to the key stages in the potable water production chain, including water intake and treatment, transportation and storage, as well as final distribution to consumers. The exercise enabled the learners to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical realities of water production processes. At the end of the visit, both students and their supervisors expressed satisfaction and appreciation for the opportunity, noting that such initiatives strengthen collaboration between academia and the professional sector.
As part of activities marking the day, CAMWATER reiterated its commitment to ensuring equitable access to safe drinking water for all, in line with its public service mandate. To this end, the corporation has introduced incentive measures to facilitate new connections. These include the planned opening of 33 new commercial agencies across the ten regional capitals, simplified procedures enabling completion of connection works within 72 hours, subject to the availability of kits, and flexible payment options for prospective subscribers.
In parallel, emphasis was also placed on the protection of hydraulic infrastructure. In the face of increasing acts of vandalism, CAMWATER is calling on citizens to remain vigilant and safeguard water meters and installations in order to ensure continuity of service.
These initiatives further reaffirm CAMWATER’s commitment to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6) — “Clean Water and Sanitation for All” — a key pillar of Cameroon’s National Development Strategy 2030 (NDS30).
