WAFCON Glory: Biya Honours Lionesses

President Paul Biya has honoured Cameroon’s Indomitable Lionesses following their historic triumph at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

The champions were received at the Unity Palace in Yaoundé on Saturday, 22 August, by President Biya and First Lady Chantal Biya at a formal state reception attended by senior government officials, sports authorities and other guests.

The reception was President Biya’s first major public engagement since returning to Cameroon after more than 70 days abroad.

In his address, the President praised the players and coaching staff for their discipline, courage and team spirit throughout the tournament.

He described the Lionesses’ victory as a moment of national pride that had united Cameroonians across regions and generations, while inspiring young people across the country.

President Biya also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the development of women’s football and urged the team to continue defending Cameroon’s honour ahead of next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

The players and technical staff subsequently met the presidential couple, led by the Minister of Sports and Physical Education and the President of the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT).

Each member of the team received the insignia of Knight of the Order of Valour in recognition of their contribution to the nation.

The President also announced housing rewards for the players and members of the coaching staff, saying they should no longer have to live in rented accommodation.

The ceremony ended with a formal group photograph at the Unity Palace, bringing to a close a day of recognition for the Lionesses’ continental achievement.
