Lawmakers in Nigeria’s Kaduna State have approved surgical castration for those convicted of raping children under the age of 14.
Kaduna governor, Nasir Ahmad el-Rufai, now needs to sign the bill for it to become a law in the State. The Governor has previously advocated castration as punishment for rapists.
Note that Nigeria’s federal law provides 14 years to life imprisonment for rapists but state legislators can set different punishments.
Castration involved removal of testes in men, and ovaries in women. Castration grossly reduces sex drive in humans and in some cases, it completely kills sex drive. It also leads to sterility given that the male or female lose their reproductive faculties.
